No Distractions!

I have a small basement room as my studio. My only rule is No Distractions! It's very hard for me to avoid distractions. Phones ring, errands to be run, meals to be cooked. My painting time is sacred. It's my time to do what I want without distractions or interruptions. I try to paint when no one else is home. While family members and friends are welcome while I'm painting, I hope they respect my No Distractions rule. That is my only rule. My dog is the only one who doesn't distract me.

The Cat Should Not Walk on Everything

I have a 15-year-old cat who really likes to jump up and walk around on my desk when I have wet acrylics or chalk pastel pieces sitting out. Needless to say, he's not that interested in following my rule.

My Music is Key

I have to have my music playing at all times when painting and any other noise that may come through the walls, windows or from my husband in the living room is a huge distraction. It's just too hard to get back in touch with the center of my inner artist who is severely OCD over everything that pertains to my half of the hobby room.

Don't Turn Off Friends

My studio is the screened in back porch. I don't mind visitors because I can keep on painting (and talking), but telephone calls are a nuisance because I paint with acrylics and the callers don't understand the fast drying time and having to use one hand to hold the phone. Nobody ever tried to touch a fresh painting, but I guess I would explain to them the problem they had caused if they did. I usually have my iPod set in a speaker set playing mostly classical music; it is soothing and blanks out the rest of the world.

Don't Step on the Art!

One rule, respect the art. This is my space not public space, You are here on sufferance, be careful and DON'T STEP ON THE ART!

Don't Get Me Out of the "Zone"

I get very little time to paint and when I do manage to get a precious few minutes alone, the last thing I want is an interruption. My rule is that if you see me painting, consider me conversationally off-limits. It is sometimes impossible to get back in the zone when I have had a discussion about the bills, the schedule or been ask where to find whatever. Please respect my needs.

Art Studio/Home

Because my studio is in my little apartment living room, I really don't have any restrictions. My grandchildren come over often to visit, and if I'm painting just want to see how its going. My 5-year old granddaughter always wants to touch the painting, but will never do it until she asks if its dry and her hands are clean.

Art Studio Rules: Out of Bounds

My space is out of bounds to all. Never enter unless I call. Move nothing, touch nothing. Don't tell me I need to organise. That's the least of my problems. Watch the work, don't criticise .

Get Out!

My studio is my sanctuary, place of sanity, personal, private... where I go to heal, regroup, recharge, dream, plan, and just be. No one is allowed there. No one is allowed there. There is no "do not disturb", just "Get Out!"
—Guest J Jackson

Do Not Disturb

If the room door is closed I do not want to be disturbed under any circumstances. If the room door is open then it's OK to pop in talk, have a coffee, comment on anything that's lying around.
—MargaretShaw

No Rules - Yet!

I have just realised I often say 'don't touch as that painting is still wet', when it isn't and I'm always asking for critiques. I do this to build up my ability to carry on painting - regardless!

Make Noise But Don't Make Noise

My biggest complaint about my studio life is I can't open my window without either hearing screaming kids, barking dogs, vulgar language, pigeons taking off in flight, loud vehicles, lawn equipment running , or the neighbors gossiping just below my window. Now with that said my husband has a habit of coming into my room "quietly" so as not to startle me which has the opposite affect. I don't hear him until he is right at the door of my room and coming in and countless times have run the paint brush across the painting from startling! But I don't want to wear earplugs because I need to know if those kids are really hurt etc etc etc.

No Distractions and Organization

The rules that I have in my studio are simple. No distractions! I like it quiet, and as much natural light as possible. I enjoy having my kids around to talk with and ask to their opinion. Organization of tools, and a clean work space is a must.
—hcontessa

Don't Touch!

My biggest studio pet peeve is when people touch my work before its finished because they get paint on their fingers and that paint on other things. Also, graphite fingerprints are a pain. The other rules are: 1. Don't disturb/Don't break my focus. If you walk in and want to talk to me, wait until I am ready to talk to you, I could be mid stroke or mid thought. 2. Don't pause my music. It's part of my train of thought. 3. Do not, EVER bring a loaded brush, pencil, or other artists tool near my page.

Lucky Me...

I have got great parents who pay my studio costs (paints and stuff, as I still mainly work at home, afterall I'm only 17) and never walk in. (a) Because it's all the way up to sets of stairs. (b) Leave me in peace, my Dad hasn't come in my room at all when I'm painting. Mum is different style, but is always able to time it so that when I've just finished or am not really busy.
