What would you pick as the most famous painting in the whole world, and what is the most famous in the country you live in? Share your choice of paintings, why you think the painting is famous, and what you like (or dislike) about it. Give the name of the painting, artist, medium, and where it is if you know. Most Famous Painting

Starry Night

Being American, I feel that Starry Night by Van Gogh is the most famous that this country posses (probably third in world's eyes). The Mona Lisa is the "most famous" in the world's eyes. I think that the Mona Lisa is slightly overrated (that's just my opinion). I also think that "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is a very widely recognizable piece, just not commonly known by name.

What is " Famous"?

Famous like in having a widespread reputation? Or meaning first-rate, excellent? In the first meaning, yes indeed, it probably is the Mona Lisa. But sadly it doesn't evoke emotions as some other paintings do. It all seems to turn around that one question: "Why does she smile in that way?" Going by the second meaning, first-rate, excellent, there are plenty of other brilliant paintings that stir up the emotions. One example hangs not far away from the Mona Lisa. I had walked past it and went back because I had this enormous "wow" feeling. The Young Martyr by Paul Delaroche.

Most Famous Painting

I think the most famous painting in the world is the Creation of Man by Michelangelo in the Sistine chapel. To me you feel as if you are there when God created Adam. One of the great art treasures.

Mona Lisa

Among the most famous, not the most beautiful, but definitely one of the most intriguing.

Mona Lisa

I think everyone has heard of this painting and most people would recognise it. I believe it is quite small.

Mona Lisa and then Sistine ceiling. I have often seen the Mona Lisa but it's not particularly the most beautiful but surely the most famous. Vincent's Starry Night is a reasonable favourite and then there are some Rembrandts and Renoirs that I like.

Las Meninas

Velazquez works lead the way to modern painting including abstract paintings.

The Last Supper

Leonado da Vinci's The Last Supper is in my opinion the most famous painting in the world. It is housed in the Refractory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Totally rare and fragile, it may be impossible to retain this worldly treasure for very much longer.

The Jack Pine

By Tom Tompson, Oil, at the National Gallery in Canada. This painting is like a religious experience, done in an impressionistic style , and the colors are like a pane glass effect.

Hesitations

I hesitate between the two oil paintings “View of Toledo” by El Greco (1541-1614), and “Las Meninas” by Velasquez (1599-1660). El Greco’s work is unique. No one has painted like him: elongated figures, dramatic atmosphere, surprising compositions, and looseness of brushstrokes. In this landscape, which is the only one by him, we have like a violent spotlight on the city, suggesting a mix of religiosity and paganism. We see a tormented view as a little in Soutine or Cezanne and Giacometti related to the figures. This is a very modern “mind-blowing painting”. In the painting of Velasquez, I find the composition very exciting. Numerous art critics have already written about this mysterious composition. We see the painter in front of us, looking at us, and standing close to the other figures. What does that mean? I personally think that when we look at the painting, we are in front of a mirror, so all the canvas IS this mirror itself! And when we look at Velasquez who looks at us too, we c
