Donate to Charity

I love doing paint by numbers canvases and I donate the finished project to very appreciative charities.

Fine Art Painter Blending Colors

I usually am a fine art painter but one day at a garage sale, I picked up a paint by number. When I started it, I thought why can't I just blend the two colors instead of butting them against each other at the "blue line?" Worked pretty good and didn't really look like a paint by number when I finished it.

Colour Mixing and Composition

I had not painted for a long time and I saw a paint by the number in a shop and gave it a go. I did a few .and I don't do them any more, but they teach you so much about colour mixing and composition.

Paint By Numbers

Art has always been my passion. And when I was very little I was given paint by number sets. I started out by staying in the lines very carefully. Then as I got braver, I would blend certain colors to make the painting look more like an original. I helped me to develop the skill of painting in oils. And as an art teacher today, I will tell my young students that story to encourage them to try their hand at painting at a young age. It takes a lot of the fear of the unknown away.

Paint by Numbers with My Father

This was a very long time ago, 50 years. My father had a heart attack, wasn't able to do anything physical, so he started painting by numbers. I watched him for hours, which lead him to buy me a set too. We did this for over a year. Very nice memories.

Passion of Childhood

I received my first Paint By Numbers when I was eight. I did a bit of a sloppy job but I loved doing it so much my parents got me another one or two over the next few years. I did a much better job on those and absolutely adored it. I think it made me feel that I could actually paint and, who knows, it might've been the spark that began the passion to learn to paint. Only at age 56 did I finally take an art course and I wish I had begun decades ago!

I love painting by numbers, it's so relaxing and addictive.

Paint by Numbers

I also found that this medium taught me a lot about colour and depth in painting. It also made me want to take lessons in painting.

Yes, I have

Yes, I have painted with numbers. I have done alot over the years. Mostly oil. I have a Last Supper picture hanging in my apartment that I did about 30 years ago. It still looks good and people think that it isn't paint by number. I like to start with the background and paint from the top left hand corner first. I blend the colors together so as not to have the blochy effect that so often shows up in a paint by number.

Paint by Numbers

I'm so glad you shared this with us !! I always loved them as a child and just 10 months ago decided to try one again. My search for a good one was fruitless though, which led me to buy paints and start painting for myself. I'm so glad I did, but I still have very fond memories :)

Yes, and it turned me on to painting

I was probably 9 years old when I painted my first and I think it was that horse! It was the beginning of learning how to see - a huge piece of the puzzle - the next one was "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and it started me on my way - and it was fun in the meantime.

Even I can paint a picture

I have painted several paint by number pictures and have enjoyed painting and seeing them years later. Each picture has memories tied into it by what I was doing in life at that particular time.

PBN - What fun....

Yes I remember PBN pictures and loved them. They took so much time and that little brush use to drive me crazy. I thought it was the only brush you could use. It wasn't until years later I discovered other wonderful brushes and learned to enjoy putting paint to paper or canvas. But those first years of PBN artworks were a joy! My mom framed them and we hung them in the hall with pride. After reading this article I have decided to purchase PBN kits for my grandchildren. What fun we will have... thanks for a fun article.

Of course I have.

I received one of these probably once a year as a child and I loved them! Later, memories of these beauties helped me to find shapes of different tones in anything I wanted to paint. The odd little blob shapes from those paint by numbers made a big contribution for me. Today, when I paint, I draw whatever I'll paint creating the shapes I see of these light, midtones, and shadows, just like in the paint by numbers. I basically create a paint by number without numbers. I figure if it's good enough for Leonardo.... Tina

Possible Holiday Gift

How I wish I'd seen this topic - PBN's - before I started mine, I might have seen it to completion. A Paint by Number kit might be a good gift to give someone who has never painted before but has shown a little interest in painting but felt they had no talent.

Paint by Numbers

My one experience with PBN's was an incompleted painting. The little patches where colors go became confusing to me after awhile and so it is on the shelf unfinished and the paint pots are probably dried out, I feel a failure because I gave up on the beautiful scene waiting to come to life. I think it is a wonderful way for would be artists to get started. My neighbor has at least 6 hanging on her walls that she and her husband painted and they are really beautiful to look at.
