Do you have a particular type of canvas you like using? What about a size or format? Why do you use what you do and how many types have you tried? Share your experiences and reasons for using the canvas you do. What Canvas Do You Use?

The B I G G E R the Better

After doing a entire room mural I was hooked. No edges, except the floor. The bad part was paint cost, and going back to the 'normal' mode. Can't do it all the time, but once is enough.

Prestretched Canvas

I buy prestretched canvas, they are easy and I love being able to hang them up easily. My local art store has sales several times a year that are excellent, and I stock up then. I like the 16X20 inch size the best after experimenting with other sizes. I'll use canvas paper for studies or other purposes. Every once in a while I let each of my kids have a canvas to paint on (ages 3 to 14) and that makes them feel like such grown-up painters. And it's fun to put them on their walls.

Type of Canvas

My favorite and quite reasonable is The Edge. It's Jerry's brand at Jerrysartarama. I use gallery wrapped and find these are least expensive than other places and I also like the surface. They hold up well and I've used them for several years.

Canvas

I paint all sizes but I prefer a large format (80cm X 100cm). I buy canvas that has already been stretched to the frame but I will also paint on wood panels, glass, paper, and even cardboard if I don't have the money for canvas. Necessity really is the mother of invention!

Very Conventional...

Canvas panels, linen prestretched canvas, oil papers. Up to 116x89 cm.

Cotton canvas

I paint on all sizes of canvases, even if I am going to frame a small one I use canvas because I find it is easer to paint on. I like to use 100c cotton , I don't use pure canvas because I find it is too hard to prime and it feels critty to paint on. My large canvases are 75cm-100cm.

starrpoint

I switch between gallery wrap pre-stetched and canvas on really, really good panels. I love working on the canvas panels but it does extend curing time,

I paint on linen which i love but sometimes on duck.

My Canvases

I'm primarily a portrait painter, so I use the standard 18x24" canvas. I have used other sizes, but I find that this works best for composition as well as being true to the details I need. I use a gallery wrap and allow the customer to choose whether or not to frame. I prefer unframed art myself. As for surface, I prefer portrait grade, but often use less expensive regular grade and apply a single coat of sanded gesso myself. I need a little tooth, but less than what is on regular grade. Regular grade alone tends to catch fine brush strokes and can bend details such as eye lashes. -- Tina Jones
