Tomato and Wine Bottle. Done on 9 x 12 in. canvas sheet using acrylic paint
Artist's Statement
This painting was inspired by the monthly project, I set up a wine bottle and a tomato and placed them on a cloth and a similar color backdrop. The light was coming from overhead toward the right. When it looked right I started painting it.
I finished fairly quickly. I painted right from the tube and mixed on the canvas. After my paint dried I glazed to give the backdrop a little different color. Still life's are not my favorite but this one progressed better than I expected.
What I'd Do Differently
- I don't think I'd do much differently except perhaps lighten up the shadows on the folds of the backdrop. I'm very happy with the bottle and cork, especially the cork.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
Still Life may not be your favorite subject, but it's worth doing one every now and then as a 'refresher' because of the control you have over the composition, the decisions you have to make setting it up, and the painting from real life. Do take another look at the two sides of your bottle, comparing them. From this angle they probably be symmetrical (one of the reasons I put a bottle into the project).
