Title and Medium
"Still Life with Apple". Watercolor on paper. 11x8".
Artist's Statement
This watercolor was painted mostly wet on dry, trying to observe and paint the small shapes of different colors and tones. The viewpoint is straight-on, as if the objects were sitting on a shelf at eye height, so the objects are effectively silhouetted.
The background is a neutral grey, chosen because it links with the grey of the stopper in the top of the bottle, eliminates the white of the paper but doesn't compete for attention with the objects.
In terms of composition, I like the way the shape of the top of the bottle is echoed by the apple. Both have two curves and a bit that sticks up. Both have a dark section at the bottom.
What I'd Do Differently
- The apple lacks a highlight, and the shadow's a bit awry.
- Maybe add more space to the sides of the objects.
