Title and Medium

Scoops Raspberry Liqueur and Green Apple by Vicki. 8x10 in. Watercolor on watercolor paper.

Artist's Statement

We don't drink in our household but we do use liqueur for cooking, so I used this Scoops raspberry torte ice cream Liqueur bottle and the last green apple. I found it difficult to find a table with enough light to make enough shadow but still seemed to find a little and a small shimmer on the bottle.

I used watercolor and made sort of a mess of my bottle and apple. It doesn't look real. I used a light blue sheet to put my still life on and the folds didn't turn out like I wanted. I plan on painting another still life with more light and on a glass table to see if I can capture the light and colors better.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I would have used acrylic but my studio isn't set up in the basement and my moving to a new house hasn't let me the space I need to set up my paints, so I plan to do another watercolor painting with Aquacolors and a different view of the still life. I'm really not happy with this still life.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

The apple reminds me of one of Cézanne's, with little blocks of color used to create the form, rather than blending. You may not be happy with the end result, but by assessing what it is you don't like about it, and by thinking about how you'd do it differently, it becomes a painting that helps you on your journey as a painter.
