Greek Orange

Title and Medium

Greek Orange. Acrylics on special for acrylics paper 16"x12" (405x305mm)

Artist's Statement

I paid a lot of attention on the placement of the items. On the lines and shapes of the background, the negative space created with the edges of the picture. Then I looked at the Notan structure, the light and dark values created, so that I could have a good range of values giving me some good contrasts. All these gave me a satisfactory in my opinion composition.

Then I looked at color harmony. Orange and green and purplish, the three secondary colors form the basic color scheme along with a muted reddish blue, the complementary of my orange for the ground on which the orange was placed. I paid good attention to reflected colors and the shadows to give me some good three dimensional forms.

I tried to have some interesting brushwork and some rather softer edges. I placed all items on a little table with a blue piece of clothe on it and lighted them from top left.

What I'd Do Differently

  • Not much. The color harmony perhaps. I like the background shapes, the brushwork and the reflections

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

It's a still life that kept me looking and looking, following the lines, absorbing the colors, enjoying the scene. There are two bits I'm undecided about whether I would change or not, the first more than the second. (1) The green shape above the bottle, which merges with the greens of the bottle and confuses my eye. (2) The green in the shadow, which I want to be a purple, in a tone between that of the table and the shadow.
