Title and Medium

"Dubonnet 2"; Watercolour on Canson paper; 9" x 12"

Artist's Statement

After reading Marion's comments on my original submission, I wondered if I could improve it a bit so I followed her advice and changed the shadows (they really were like that, though, because of the light coming from different directions, but I agree I didn't look right). I also put in a horizontal line to simulate the back edge of a table, added several layers of colour to the background, obliterated the word "Dubonnet", and cropped the whole thing.

Although it's far from perfect, I feel I now have a stronger painting.

What I'd Do Differently

  • Move the horizontal line up a bit -- the way it is makes the bottle look a bit too thin.
  • Start over if I had the time!

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Sometimes reality needs to be adjusted when it stands alone in a painting it won't read 'right'. You've artistic license remember, so don't stress about doing it!

I think this painting has built on the first version and moved it up a level, and you should be pleased with it. Gorgeous colors in the shadows that make them seem to shimmer!

Having enough painting time is a problem for many of us (myself included!) but don't dismiss the value of painting a third version of this rather than moving on to a new subject. Keep the arrangement the same, or add another element to the arrangement, or rearrange the bottle and onion, and then call it a series,
