Flamingos

Title and Medium

"Flamingos". Watercolour on 300gsm A4 (297mm x 210mm) watercolour paper. Colours: cadmium red, ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.

Artist's Statement

When I saw the three colours painting project, I felt very excited. I wanted to submit my painting but I was very confused about the subject. Then suddenly the picture of colourful flamingos in the blue water came in my mind. Then I drew this composition and tried to apply colour as many variation as possible.

To get the colour either I mix colour in the palette or in the paper directly. For white colour I used the untouched paper. I really enjoyed doing this painting. I think I will do limited colour painting again.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I wish I drew the flamingos little bit upside of the paper then I could draw the reflection in the water.
  • This is my first submission. Also this is first time I used very limited palette for painting and learn lot of thing about colour mixing. I also tried glazing.
  • I wish I could achieve more brightness but I don't know how.
  • I like the wavy effect of the water most.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Part of what gives a sense of brightness is the contrast between light and dark tones, as well as pale and saturated color. You can't get lighter than the white of the paper, but what you can do is add more contrast. For instance, glazing another layer of color over the darkest areas on the flamingo. Or glaze with blue over the water. That said, if this were my painting I wouldn't tweak it for fear of overworking it and losing the lovely sense of the birds feathers!
