 Stormy Sea, Abstracted Monoprint

An abstract monoprint, called "Stormy Sea".

What I Used

Acrylic paint and 95gsm sketchbook paper (A5 size).

What I Did

I placed three different blues onto a clean sheet from an acrylics paper palette. (Prussian blue, cerulean blue, turquoise deep.) I didn't add any retarder to the paint because I had already visualized in my mind's eye what I was going to do, and the few minutes acrylics takes to dry on a cold day would give me sufficient working time.

I spread the paint around a little with a palette knife to mix them, then used to knife to create the marks. I wiped the paint I was lifting off on one side of the paper palette, away from the "printing paint".

When that was done, I fetched the sheet of sketchbook paper I'd dampened with water and left in the sink before I started, blotted it on a spare painting apron, then placed it over the paint. I then held a corner of the sheet of paper as I moved a brayer over the back of the sheet, moving from bottom to top each time.

Advice

  • If you're using acrylic paint for monoprints, add retarder unless you're a fast worker.
  • Experiment with using both dry and damp paper. The results can be quite different.
