Here's my little friend in the murky green water.

Title and Medium

"Three Koi" 4.5" x 7.5" Silver Gouache, White Acrylic, gel medium. Done on paper.

Artist's Statement

I spotted this Koi pond downtown most unexpectedly. Such expensive fish trapped in such a small pond. There warning signs and cameras all over the place. It stood in front of a fabric store. Lots of crime. Anyway I was taken by how there quiet movements and apparent comfortability. So I started to take some pictures and had this project in mind using some sort of green.

When I got home though, I was really taken by the white koi and its translucent white scale. I think in the natural there scales would be orange and healthy and some were. But the albinos proved most beautiful. I spent some vary engrossed time on this project despite its size. In the painting I used a scratching method to give outline to Lilli and some fish. I walk away from many things but this one really means a lot to me.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I still unsure why I used that gel medium over the painting, I think maybe an attempt to soften it up a bit. It's really something for me to look at and smile despite all the hell around me.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

It's a pity the photo of your painting isn't clearer. The thumbnail version of it shows a composition that leads my eye around and around, as if the fish were swimming. I'm sure the silver paint adds to this effect too.

From the enjoyment this painting has given you -- in the creation and the final result -- I'd say it's a subject you should use for a series. Good ideas for paintings deserve more than one outing.
