Artist's Statement

This painting is expressive of how feel when I'm out in the world and maybe even how I want to appear...mysterious and observant. Sometime during the process I thought it was too dark, then at times not dark enough...when I look at it now, it kinda makes me sad...but then, this is only one side of me.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I would put in more contrast in the whole painting... and highlight a the facial features a little more?

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Afraid the glare on the painting in the photo means I can't really see what's happening in the bottom half. But on the face itself, I agree about adding some highlights. The overall tonal range need not go all the way up to the lightest of lights, but I think a few lighter tones will pull the viewer's eye into the face more strongly.
