Relaxed reading

Title and Medium

Relaxing man in garden, in green watercolors. Size 21x15 cm. On paper.

Artist's Statement

I tried to use green color as it indicates calmness, peace. A man in a garden reading his favorite magazine without any disturbance shows good and peaceful feeling. I have a photo of myself reading paper in a garden. From long time I was thinking of making a similar painting. Now I got a chance so it inspired me.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I will try different colours for different feelings.
  • This is a good exercise relating the feeling with painting.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Doing a monochromatic study is an excellent way to get a feeling for a composition, to test an idea for a larger painting. I would be tempted to crop off the right-hand third of the composition, to move the figure out of the center. At the moment the elements of the painting push the eye into the figure, into the center of the painting, but don't encourage the eye to move out again, to wander around the composition. Hold up a hand to block off part of the photo and see what you think.
