Isabella in Soft Pastel Monochrome

Title and Medium

Isabella, soft pastel, not my forte.

Artist's Statement

This is my little neighbor, she is very sweet, but I can see a little mischievousness in her. I tried to capture that. I enjoyed the project so much I completely lost myself in it for a couple of hours.

What I'd Do Differently

  • The proportions are off and I may have cheated by using a muted green background paper. I felt like getting my hands into something "real" tonight even though I don't usually work with pastels. Good lesson learned, trying to figure out how to make the different shades of the colored picture into just one. Thanks. Any critique is welcome.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Nope, not cheating, as the project instructions don't specify a color for the ground. Inspirational in fact, as it gives you an 'extra' color .

That said, I don't think I'd have picked green, as although it's a lovely background color, it gives a sickly tinge to the face. Adding skin tones to her face, will of course solve this (though the painting won't fit the project any more.)
