Title and Medium
Watercolour on paper. Size A4.
Artist's Statement
Blue Lily - I used artistic licence to paint my blue lily. I enjoyed this very much although it wasn't easy to get real dark blues.
Sleeping Sail Boat in the Bay - I used purple to paint this. The colour we get when night starts covering everything with a blanket of unrealism.
I was at the office and used my idle time to create this. I enjoyed it like I enjoy all of the projects and challenges. Many thanks. The photo doesn't give a true view of the blue and purple colours.
What I'd Do Differently
- I am quite pleased with the results.
- My husband and daughter both like them very much.
- I am learning a lot from all the beautiful listings and valuable comments.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
I think your enjoyment of the challenge of painting with one color only is showing in your paintings! You've a lovely range of tones, and when you transfer this to using colors, you're sure to get very pleasing results. As you've discovered, the choice of color dictates how dark the darkest tone can be. For a subject such as a lily, the narrower range of tones helps, I think, to reflect the delicate nature of its petals and structure.
Having the stem at an angle, rather than aligned with the edge of the paper, makes it feel more dynamic. The lines of the lily and its stem lead your eye up and down the painting. The curves in the negative space around the lily lead my eye around too.
