 The Fiendish Factory

Wretched human condition.

 The Fiendish Factory

Crying shame.

Title and Medium

The Fiendish Factory. Oil on canvas board. 65 cm x 54 cm.

Artist's Statement

I chose also to add a detail of the background of Leonardo’s painting (“The Virgin the Child and Ste Anne”) on the left part of the background, which maybe, can suggest a divine hope to this wretched people.

Lessons Learned

  • I dare say I like the surprising ambivalent result.
  • Perhaps the foreground is too empty.
  • There are not enough figures.
  • The factory is not painted with enough care.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

It's not an easy painting to look at, but some of art's most powerful paintings are unsettling. I think if we stay away from painting the darker side of life, we're doing ourselves a disservice as artists.

I find myself wanting to crop off a bit of the foreground — with so much going on in the middle and back of the composition, it feels too empty. An alternative would be to fill it with "industrial waste" of some sort.
