Hurrying By II

Title and Medium

Hurrying By, 29 x 60 cm, oil on canvas.

Artist's Statement

This is the second time I am submitting this painting (see first version). After reading the comments on my first attempt (thank you for looking!) I decided to continue working on my painting. I reduced the foreground as Marion suggested, and I also changed the shape of the forest in the background. This lead to a chain reaction.

The sky became lighter and the buildings and the ground darker. The people are now moving horizontally in front of the buildings and I added a couple of dogs. I actually think that the painting looks more like a Lowry now than it did before.

Lessons Learned

  • I learned that even if you are working with canvas on stretcher bars you can change the composition of the painting by cutting.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

I agree with you about it feeling more like Lowry, and love the sense of the people hurrying past. They're all busy, all rushing to get somewhere, no eye contact between them. And behind them looms the industrial buildings... maybe there's something in them that's causing them to rush past?
