Here Comes the Parade. 8"x10" watercolor on 140# watercolor paper
Artist's Statement
This is my third painting in the style of LS Lowry, the second one was previously submitted (view painting). This one is also of a street scene in my town which is known for the abundance of trees. I wanted to get my people closer together, but lost the matchstick thin look in my modern day casual crowd waiting for the parade to start. I may have overworked it some but am happy with the results.
My nod to LS Lowry is the stark building and the white ground without shadows and feel this is a more cheerful scene than he would have rendered. Lowry's draws you in with his unique style and subjects.
Lessons Learned
- I am satisfied with the results.
- I wish I could stop before I overwork the details.
- What I like the most is this was a challenge that I wouldn't have done on my own and I enjoyed the process.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
Lovely sense of a crowd, with depth and an array of things happening. One way to stop yourself overworking details is to use a bigger brush than you would normally. That way it's impossible to get into the details... provided you can resist picking up a smaller one!
