Title and Medium
My Town, water color on 6x9 inches, Canson watercolor paper block
Artist's Statement
This is my second attempt to paint in LS Lowry's style. I overworked my first one. I found it difficult to mix a wide range of greens with the limited range and wasn't quite sure where I was going with my people until I added the dogs.
I found Lowry's story as interesting as his art. I am also self taught and started drawing after my working days were over.
Lessons Learned
- I think my people are more spread out in the scene and might be more in Lowry's style in smaller groups with just tops of heads in the background bringing them closer together. I'm happy with my attempt and like the blue canopy showing in in the background as well as gestures of the people in the street.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
I think you should be pleased with this, the sense of the location, the feeling of people wandering about. My favorite figures are the ones interacting with their dogs, who are all very much individuals caught in a moment's action. Some of the other figures feel a little like clones, and a little too carefully spaced.
The top two-thirds of the composition is the strongest for me. In the bottom third it begins to feel as if you've carefully set the people at equal distances apart hold up your hand to crop off the lowest 'row' of people (but not the couple with their dog towards the right!) and see what you think it does to the composition in terms of the pattern of the figures.
