Title and Medium
Reflections on the Water. Oils on Canvas Paper. Size 12 by 16 inches.
I'm submitting another painting for this project - I wanted a different size and format from my first submission. I want to thank Yayamama for the reference photo I used.
I liked the dark left side of the painting even though to me it doesn't quite fit the look of the lighter colors of the sky but it does keep the eye from straying out of the picture. The large expanse of water was perfect to use impressionist strokes of all the sky colors reflected in the water.
What I'd Do Differently
- I don't think I'd do anything differently because I think the sky is far more colorful at sunset than at other times of day. On the other hand, I might want to make another painting of a brighter sunny day and raising the sun up mid sky level.
- I like the colors used in the painting and the reflections in the water.
Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com Painting, says:
Lovely sense of the sun, of it being too bright to look at and so you see something that's more or less round but without a hard edge. I also like the dark on the left-hand side of the composition. It gives somewhere restful for the eye amidst all the sunset colors, as well as keeping your eye in the composition as you say. Together with the sliver of dark on the horizon, the dark tones unite the composition overall, but don't make it feel confined. There's a sense of the scene continuing into the distance off to the right.
