Title and Medium
Yellow Roses. 18 x 24 in. Acrylic on canvas.
Artist's Statement
I was looking at a potted rose on the deck and as I got closer and closer the colors started to blend together. I was actually looking at light through the plant. I decided to try and put the colors on canvas and get the sensation of light coming through the leaves without getting into any plant shapes, rather just using the colors I saw. I used Cadmium Yellow and Ultramarine Blue right out of the tube and spread it with a painting knife blending it on the canvas with a roller. It was easy to do as there was not any detail. Just color.
I thought how much more abstract can you get. I'm happy with the result.
What I'd Do Differently
- In a future painting like this I'll probably work in some darker green to give the impression of leaves and more color closer to the shape of the flowers. I like the ease that I was able to do this with.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
Your words made my day, reading how you had a completely different experience of a rose than the usual, not seeing just the flower and painting it realistically. Indeed I don't think you could get more abstracted! It shows how nature can lead and inspire you with colors.
