Artist's Statement
After many attempts, maybe this one qualifies? A real challenge for me, keeping myself from painting realism. This came from a picture of the flowers after a rain, captured rain droplets on the petals, but was unable to duplicate them (this will be a challenge for me later). Enjoyed and think I've learned and stretched myself in this endeavor. Tried an iris first, simply could not do it! This comes closer, maybe? Challenges are good, though not comfortable.
What I'd Do Differently
- Pinks are not my choice of colors, but found them interesting to shade and highlight a bit. Would try another color.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
I definitely think it qualifies; you've taken a section of a flower and used it to create an abstract painting of shapes and color. You may still see the flower origins of it, but a viewer new to the painting will likely not. As flowers pinks have interesting shapes and ruffles, though I do prefer the darker ones to the light pink ones. I think the sunlight throws more intersting shadows in the ones with stronger colors.
Water drops take a bit of practice to get right, but it's worth spending time painting some studies of them because they can add a special touch to a painting. For some tips, see How to Paint Realistic Water Drops.
