Artist's Statement

Abstraction if not my cup of tea. However I did one in 2007 for the abstraction from nature challenge. Aince this year's theme is narrowed to flower only, I tried this one.

I took one flower from a tree -- I do not know the name of tree -- and I tried tight closeup and not to concentrate on details. I was inspired by the beautiful whorls of petals and y-shaped veins and subtle pink and yellow colors. So I painted only a portion of flower with y-veins. I enjoyed the challenge.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I wanted to underplay the veins but it has come very boldly. The image looks like more of a crop than abstraction. Could I have avoided the green background and extended the petal more? I like the whorls and colors.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

Abstraction of a flower is just a crop, but a carefully chosen one. Because you know the source of the inspiration/idea for the painting, you're more likely to see it as part of something larger rather than as shapes and colors than someone coming to the painting without this knowledge. In the same way names of paintings guide our interpretation.
