Title and Medium
Freedom Poppy 1. Acrylic on canvas. 20"x20"
Artist's Statement
I have created many flowers in collage, watercolor, printmaking as well as paint. This time I decided to abstract the image by giving an insect's perspective.
Pink poppies in my garden intrigued me as I expected them to grow red as indicated on the plant when I bought it. The pink flowers were joyful and Mother nature's surprise to me.
What I'd Do Differently
- It was fun to do this point of view. So much so that I painted a series of seven more.
- You can't fool Mother Nature but she did fool me as well as teaching me to enjoy the shapes and gesture of this beautiful bloom.
Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:
Poppies are a great flower for up-close abstractions, as they can have such different colors between their petals and hearts. And when the sun shines through the delicate petals, there's yet more tonal variation.
I find this very striking, with the large pieces of intense dark immediately grabbing my attention, and my eye then pulled out and pushed around by the intriguing shapes of color.
