Foxglove Ala Klee

"Foxglove Ala Klee"

Title and Medium

Abstracted Foxglove Blossom. 7 1/2" x 11". Watercolor on 300# cold-press paper

Artist's Statement

Inspired by a Paul Klee documentary. He found that by drawing a circle and putting a straight line through the circle, protruding up through the top and protruding through the bottom, and manipulating the shape was a way of abstracting a subject. This seemed a perfect idea to execute my abstracted single blossom.

I used opera pink, a bit of ultramarine blue with the pink for lavender and sap green for the foliage and in the radiating form around mouth of blossom in highly diluted sap green.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I'm not displeased nor really happy with the outcome. The color doesn't seem vibrant enough for an abstract, even though they are complimentary colors to an extent.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

If I squint at the top of the painting, the green and pink seem very close in tone. I think if the green were darker, this would make the pink seem more vibrant. A thin glaze with a bit of blue over the green would darken it, but first try it on a scrap piece of paper to check you like the result and how strong the glaze wants to be.
