What I Used for This Painting
20x20" oil on canvas
Why This Painting is My Favorite
I like the limited palette and close intimate feel of this painting. I bought a bouquet and took many photos of individual flowers until I came up with a good composition. This chrysanthemum was originally dark burgundy in color but I took artistic license to change the color of the flower. My daughter's college roommate/good friend received this as a graduation present.
Lessons Learned
- I used too much Titanium White early on, producing chalkiness. I had to glaze over many areas with transparent warm colors to remedy the situation.
- I learned to make a decision as to where I wanted the eye to linger (the center of the flower) so I had to make everything else less important by de-emphasising the rest of the flower.
