What I Used for This Painting
Acrylics - on paper, A4 size (21cm x 29cm)
Why This Painting is My Favorite
I had an extreme love/hate relationship with this painting. It was a commission from the subject's (Natasha) mum and she really put me through the mill.
She rejected five versions of the painting before accepting this one and I had to put it aside for a month at one point because I was so exasperated with it all. I thought a lot of her observations were idiotic at the time (chin too this, mouth too that etc etc ). Now, when I look back, I'm pleased I was pushed so hard because it made me produce better work. I think the lady got a better portrait than the one I originally handed over.
Lessons Learned
- Sometimes it IS possible to make a painting better, even if you have reached the 'fiddling' stage.
- Mum's have a different view of their daughters than the rest of the world.
- Painting to order is a very difficult business.
- It's the tiny details that can make or break a good portrait.
