What I Used for This Painting
I prepared a panel of MDF with two coat of gesso and two coats of white acrylic, sanding smooth between coats. I used coloured pencils to sketch the picture from an old black and white photo using a grid to scale up and then acrylics to paint the main picture and some pencil work for the fabric . The board is 12 inches by 15.
Why This Painting is My Favorite
This is a painting of my friend's Granddad , (my first commission and probably my last!). I am colour blind to some colours, I can't tell dark green from black and most pale colours are just guess work, I rely on my grand daughters to tell me if I am very wrong (they think his face is a bit too pink) but I say old men do go pink sometimes.
The painting is going to my friend soon I hope he likes it. This is the fifth portrait I have done and I have been painting for a year.
Lessons Learned
- Stick to coloured photos to copy from and paint what I see
