What I Used for This Painting
I painted this piece on Canvas, 50x60 inches, with acrylic first, then on top of that I used oil paint sticks.
Why This Painting is My Favorite
I love the qualities of oil as well as acrylic. Oil helps me punch up the color and acrylic gives me a quick drying background color.
The piece is based on Le Moulin de la Gallette by Renior originally and Dufy subsequently. Sort of a garden, dance hall, public outdoors party with lots of people.
As far as the content goes. I studied Dufy and how he used areas of color in a watercolor medium to define space, not necessaries objects. I studied Renior who Dufy was copying. So to me it was copying Dufy, copying Renior. That was fun. I had input from both sources as well as my own bent toward abstract expressionism. So, I honored all of these and brought it to a unified completion.
Lessons Learned
- I needed to paint the piece the same size as the original in order to make the same movements with the brush and get the feel of the scale. Painting it smaller was a possibility, but would not have allowed the big brush strokes.
