Tree with a Giraffe

Medium/Support/Size

This was an acrylic painting on canvas, 16 x 20 inches.

My Thoughts About This Challenge

Marion's tree photo was actually two trees, one behind the other. This painting is only of the first tree closest to the camera, but the flat landscape needed something else. My wife tells me that lions would have been more appropriate than a giraffe, but I chose a giraffe.

Tips and Tricks

  • Painting wet on wet made the clouds in the upper right quadrant difficult to copy without using heavy gobs of white paint. Next time, more time will be allocated to drying.
  • The tree branches/leaves fit the impressionist style of duplicating. The tree trunk was more difficult, not like trees I am used to.
  • I'll use the "T" square suggested by Marion for painting the horizon next time.

Marion Boddy-Evans, Painting Guide, says:

This photo was taken in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, where lion and giraffe are both found. As well as lots of elephants!
