My Thoughts About This Challenge
This is my second version of the tree. I wanted to try out a different composition. I have used a limited palette of Prussian blue, yellow ochre, burnt sienna and white for this painting. It helped that I knew the forms and the effect of light on the tree from my first attempt. I used flberts 12 and 8 for the painting and could work quickly, not needing to look at the photo often. The tree and the landscape seem to change with the change in colours and composition. I enjoyed working on this painting.
Tips and Tricks
- It is good to know one's subject well. Having sketched the tree once for my first attempt and then having painted it helped in doing the second version more effortlessly. Even when I am not planning to paint the same subject twice it will be good to do more than one sketch of the subject as familiarity with the subject helped in brushwork.
- Limited palette is great for quick and moody studies. It also gives me more room on the palette to mix colours.
- I do not like the use of white in this painting and think I should have muted it with a bit of burnt sienna or yellow ochre.
