What Type of Palette Do You Use?

A plastic microwave plate with airtight lid.

The Paint Colors/Brands I Use

I only use this palette for acrylics. The photo indicates where I put the colours. I prefer Lascaux liquid studio acrylics for main tasks, but I also have a selection of impasto acrylics by almost every manufacturer for expressive work! I love Liquitex heavy body acrylics!

I use a limited palette, but don't stick to it if I need to "expand". Alongside carbon black, titanium white and gold ochre (Lascaux), which are always on the palette, I usually have a cadmium red, one or two blues, a mauve or purple, orange, alizarin crimson or a dark lake and maybe a green.

Why I Use These Colors

I always do my thing. I don't think I could cope with strict rules about colour, though of course the basic rules of hot and cool apply. I have a good eye and can always exactly mix any colour I need, even years later. But I mix mostly on the canvas, except for small amounts of pastel shades that crop up. For that I use whatever colours happen to be there to mix them!

I put gold ochre and black on the same side because they also make olivy green! White goes on its own and I use round the edges of the large colour blob to mix any pastels.

Any other colours (blue, purple, green, orange, red) go together in the large compartment. >However, I use bright and lemon yellows straight from the tube or in a segregated container if I want to use them pure.
