How/Why I Painted It & Who It Is
Reading in the history of art, artists didn't start doing self portraits until quite late. Then I think it was to aid in their identity (as an artist).
I did it on a whim, using several photos. It is an acrylic on canvas 14 x 18".
How I Feel About This Painting
I didn't know I looked so sinister. The piece still needs work; to move the right eye closer to the nose and perhaps do something with the mouth.
Previously I had tried several other faces. The one of the Chinese girl (dark skinned) came out rather well and one of two Indonesian boys was okay(just). But a light colored woman has never been completed because it just won't come out right.
Painting oneself is rather egotistical, but it is practise and the only person who will be dissatisfied will be me.
The eyes stand out too much and somehow need softening, to make it less "staring". And I feel it needs more work.
Tips and Tricks
- I tried the recommended division of the face.
- Color (skin tone) still is a problem for me and came out too dark.
