What I Used for This Painting
This is an oil on canvas, using my usual limited palette of alazarin red, ultramarine, cobalt blue, cerulean blue,lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red and white.
Why This Painting is My Favorite
I feel that it captures the excitement of sailing, in the way that the boats are racing towards a mark. I like the contrast between the blues and the deep red of the sails.
I am very fond of the sailing paintings by the Dutch masters such as Van der Velde and the modern masters exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Painting's exhibition, and have tried to emulate the feel of these paintings.
Lessons Learned
- Doing a basic sea with v shaped brush strokes. The use of perspective in the sky. The use of large brushes for the main painting and using a rigger for the rigging.
