Size of My Studio
My studio is my studio apartment - 550 sq ft of wonderful! The ceilings are two stories high, one wall is a window and there are three skylights.
How I Organize My Studio
My supplies are stored in a four-drawer Sterlite unit and on an adjoining three-shelf unit. The top is covered with foamboard and freezer paper to protect the surface. I use a tabletop easel, but many times paint on a table located in front of my storage units.
For a while my supplies were moved around in an attempt to create a separate work area. But now they occupy my entire space because that's who I am - an artist who works when the spirit moves me.
My empty canvases are lined next to my storage units; my sketch pads and painting pads are on the tabletop, bedside table, bookshelves or chairs. Pencils, pens are lying about - always available.
Finished works are displayed on top the kitchen cabinets, the staircase up to the loft area and various other surfaces throughout the apartment. This arrangement works well for me 'cause trying to segregate and organize my art stuff was keeping me from creating.
Advice
- It's not about the space, organization or tools. It's about creating. Having a beautiful studio doesn't make you an artist anymore than having a good camera makes you a photographer.
