Do You Add a Date to Your Paintings

For many years I dated my paintings. Now I do not date my paintings. I may write the date on the back with a pencil, never with a marker. This is because the marker can bleed through.

Do You Put Your Contact Details on the Back

I staple my business card to the back on the stretcher bar.

Where Do You Sign Your Paintings

I place my signature in the lower right hand corner.

How Do You Sign Your Paintings

I have problems with this because I do not want the signature to take away from the painting. For the past few years I have used my initials. Lately I have gone back to signing my full name or a combination of the initial of my first name and the full last name. I may go back to using my initials.

I have seen paintings in which the artists signature ruins the painting. The signature it is so large that it draws your attention from the subject matter. I find this to be a problem whether the painting is realistic or abstract.

Advice

  • I cannot give any advice because I am still trying to find a way to sign my paintings! I wonder if by using my initials people will know that I am the artist. Then again if I use my full name I have to be careful that the signature doesn't detract from the painting.
