I graduated in 1985 with a BFA in Photography. I always admired the fine art courses and artist but was really afraid to delve into the world of painting. Not sure what my fear was about, but probably of failure.
I never took a painting class there but years later I remember my art history class and think of the great artist that paved the way for contemporaries like me.
I started painting about three years ago on my own. I have taken a few random course here and there but the Corcoran was the most enriching. Never mind that the school is well over 100 years old and atmosphere is as stimulating as the classes. I think my time there was one of the top five most important times of my life.
I was lucky to have been able to experience the Corcoran through student loans and working partime at night. The term "starving artist" certainly fit. My classmates and I spent many a dinner time at art openings eating Brie cheese and jug wine. I suppose I can look back now with a since of nostalgia and romanticize the time spent there. But it really was a place of self discovery and a perspective changing experience.
I would highly recommend the Corcoran Scool of Art to anyone whether they are interested in a four year degree or just non credit courses.
I will say that your site, About.com:painting has definitely been a huge influence for me. You have educated me on topics that I would have probably not discovered on my own. I work out of my house and don't have much contact with fellow artists. So feed back and ideas don't come easy.
Thank you so much for your time and effort in bringing topical concepts and techniques to your readers, all for free!
I must say you have educated me on the same level and above as some of the painting courses I've taken along the way. Thank you!
