In this demo of painting my little house in the snow, I am trying to show the steps I took from photo to finished painting. It's not the great Canadian Rockies, but I am pleased with the outcome, it has the feel I was looking for. Sort of a fairy-tale look.
I used Strathmore watercolor paper 90 lb cold press on the smooth side (which I think is the back side), Prismacolors colored pencils and watercolor pencils, and a white pastel. I use a lot of white because white is my blender color no matter what I am painting.
First of all I took a series of photos, of our house and the snow covered trees in our yard. I didn't want the painting to look like a photograph or too realistic I just wanted it to have the "look" I was after and I knew that I would know what that was when I achieved it.
I took the photos on a day when there was no sun so I wouldn't get that washed out look and as you can see, the snow casts purple shadows over everything. A wonderful softness to the photos no harsh shadows. I took a lot of photos but those shown here are the ones I chose to use for reference.
