From the Artist: I had the hardest time coming up with a subject for this project. I wanted to display the colors as pure as possible. Just this morning I thought of a hot air balloon festival I attended a few years back in the Southwestern US.

In truth, the colors are so foreign to me. I never use pthalo blue or lemon yellow, so somewhere along the line in rendering the balloons, I thought they looked like onions. I laughed and said to myself "Why not?" smiles. Foreign colors and foreign objects in the air seemed to go together. I've always liked Salvador Dali, but never really thought to try anything like his work. Hmmm, I wonder if he had a painting project with strange colors that opened his style up?

I used no white in this one, rather I used a little odorless thinner and brush or paper towel corner here and there to rub out some highlights. The whole thing took about an hour and was quite fun.

From the Painting Guide: I'm glad you mentioned Dali as when I first looked at your painting my thoughts were along the line of "seriously weird subject..." But of course if it's Surrealist, then it's meant to be out of the ordinary. After I your title, what I'd seen as octopus arms turned into shoots from a growing onion. It's a fabulously imaginative idea!

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Spend a moment outlining the major elements in the composition, notice how their placement and shapes lead your eye across the composition.

Color: If burnt sienna isn't a color you usually include in your palette, I think this painting shows what a beautiful color it is. It produces a lovely range of tones depending on whether you use it thick or thin, and will work for all sorts of subjects, but particularly landscapes.
