From the Artist: Using a limited palette was fun and educational. It forced me to be creative with my shadows and definition. I'll use this exercise again.
From the Painting Guide: If you'd been working with a full range of colors, rather than a set limited palette, I bet you'd never have used such colors on an elephant because the pull to use "real" colors would've been too strong.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Having a subject go off the edges often produces a stronger and more visually intriguing composition than if it were contained within the edges. It creates a sense of the scene continuing beyond the edge, of space.
The pose of the elephant at a slight angle rather than dead upright also adds a feeling of movement, as if it's walking towards you. The one thing I would look at though it the very straight back leg; I think it a bit more shape to it like the others have.
