From the Artist: I bought a beautiful strelitzia flower (Strelitzia reginae, bird of paradise) for painting it in oils. When I finished the painting –- which I will submit for April's painting challenge -– I started looking at the details of the flower and its heart.

I felt the urge of capturing it on canvas but in a totally free way, opposed to how I painted it previously and he natural choice was to get a palette knife and let colors and sensations flow. That's for me the burst of energy and beauty, the soul of that flower. As it resulted in a rather abstract painting, I suppose it can speak to any beholder in a different way, although, I hope, energy and life will transpire anyway.

From the Painting Guide: I love the vibrant oranges and blues strelitzias can have, as well as the intriguing shapes, strong lines, and sharp angles in the flowers. They really are unlike anything else and, I think, lend themselves to abstractions.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Complementary Colors: The orange/blue combination found naturally in strelitzias are, of course, complementary colors. The "theory" behind complementary colors is that they make one another appear more intense and vibrant. Those are certainly words that come to my mind when thinking about the colors in strelitzia flowers.

Composition: Spend a moment tracing the strong lines in the coomposition. Notice how the majority are straight, which makes the blue curve to the left of center more striking.
