From the Artist: Great project! This painting took time and really compelled me to understand what the term fat on lean meant with oil painting! I work primarily in water-based mediums and ink, and want to understand the complexity of oils. It is early morning, about 06h00 in August-on an island called Hupper Island just off the coastal town of Port Clyde, Maine, USA.

From the Painting Guide: Glad to hear you enjoyed the challenge of the project! Certainly working with a knife with oil paint means it's easy to scrape off paint if things go awry.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Texture: Take a particular look at the way the branches of the tree have been painted, the texture and marks are great examples of what using a painting knife rather than a brush can produce. Almost minimalist marks when taken individually, that together work very strongly.

Composition: I find the solitary telephone pole distracting though it does tie the two dark bands together. I think it's because it's so narrow and such a strong vertical. How about using artistic license to turn it into a small tree or adding a small tree next to it, which would then unite with the tree off to the right-hand edge?
