From the Artist: Eye of the Storm was done with a knife and leftover paint from my palette. It was inspired by Mother Nature's fury during Hurricane Wilma in 2005 in area I live.

From the Painting Guide: There's so much energy in this painting, in the colors, the texture from the knife painting, and the dominant circular motion. The strong splash of yellow at the eye of the vortex really pulls my eye in.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Think abstract art doesn't need or benefit from composition? Think again, and consider how the placement of the eye of the storm fits the rule of thirds.

Knife Painting: If you've never tried painting with a knife rather than a brush, it's well worth giving it a go as it not only feels quite different, but the result is very different. The term "buttery" that's so often applied to oil and acrylic paint seems really relevant too when you're spreading paint with a painting knife.

You will likely use more paint than with a brush, but that's because the result is generally more impasto, or textured. It's a very effective tool for creating expressive marks and areas of flat, smooth paint, but can also be used for small, precise mark-making or adding small highlights.

Take a look at the full-sized version of the painting to get a closer view of the texture, then give knife painting a try yourself!
