From the Artist: This painting is one of a triptych. I have depicted an abstracted landscape, simplifying the elements of sky, trees and land, in earthy colors.

From the Painting Guide: I really like this painting, the abstraction and colors; the way the trees are anchored to the top layer of soil through the use of color; the rich colors in the ground; the sense of depth, as if it's a cross-section slice through the Earth.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Color of the Sky: The sky is a very light tone, quite a strong contrast to the dark tones of the ground. Would adding more color into the sky distract from the other elements of the painting, or add to it?

Composition: One of the 'rules' of composition is that it makes for a stronger painting to have an odd number of elements, rather than an even (see Composition Class: Choosing the Number of Elements). Cover up one of the trees with your hand and see how it influences the composition. Then cover up two of the trees, and consider the effect.

Taking It One Step Further: How about painting a version in which the roots of the trees in the soil are visible? Of course, if this species of tree has shallow, surface roots, this idea would be implausible.
