From the Artist: This is an old gas station in Bergen, in Norway, that dates back to 1927. I chose yellow ocher to capture the feel of late summer. I had some problems making the shadows dark enough though.
From the Painting Guide: Your choice of color complements the subject, creating a painting with a sense of the end of a hot day, and of nostalgia.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Darkness of Shadows: When painting with monochrome, your choice of color will determine how dark a tone you'll be able to get. You won't get a tone darker than the pure undiluted version of the color without adding another color. But resist reaching for black to darken the tone -- first try it and see what happens. In this painting I think the darkest sections yellow ocher are perfect. Any darker and they wouldn't fit as comfortably with the rest of the painting.
