From the Artist: "This is an original from a photo. It is my daughter and her friend, sacked out after a day of play."
From the Painting Guide: Notice how the sepia tones in this monochrome painting instantly give a feeling of a Victorian photograph, which is enhanced by the subject matter. (Contrast this to the blue monochrome paintings in this gallery, which have a greater moodiness.) The girls look as if they've been captured in the beam of a torchlight, with a circle of light that comes to an abrupt edge, rather than light coming through a partially opened door. (A flash photo would've lit up the whole room.) If this light faded more gently, it would remove the slightly menacing overtone I feel in this painting - who would be looking at sleeping children in the beam of a torch? Perhaps there should be some suggestion of the parent, maybe as a shadow leaning against the doorframe? I like the contrast between the fine features and hands, and the textured bedclothes.
