From the Artist: This painting was originally done entirely with a palette knife. After
dried, I used various glazes to bring it out and get things set right. I had assistance from the kind people on the forum to make this the painting you see now.
From the Painting Guide: As you discovered, the forum's a great place for getting feedback and a variety of opinions on a painting, whether it's still a work in progress, a finished painting, or a particular aspect you're having trouble with. Read the thread on your painting, I can see a few things in this version of your painting that were suggested, such as the bit of light on the back right of the bottle and glass rims.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Realism: Assuming you're aiming for a realistic style of painting, I think the best part of the painting is the slice of melon. The subtle shift in colors in the flesh, the dark edge to the skin, the shadow on the inside edge where the pips have been scooped out, the sense of the textures of melon -- it beautifully painted.
Background: The dark background behind the melon allows the flesh of the yellow to really glow. But it also makes me wonder about the tone of the glass, whether this ought to be darker given that it's transparent and the background would show through. Even with a strong light shining from the left, I'd expect part of the glass to show dark background, not for it to have such a strongly defined line all around it in a similar tone. Perhaps the right-hand edge needs to be lost a bit into the shadow? See this photo for what I mean.
