From the Artist: I don't think this is a 'traditional' still life with fruit... it's more of an extreme close-up with fruit. (Just as the days of summer run together, I think I've run the July and August painting projects together, as this seems a little abstract...) The title tells you what kind of fruit I've painted, assuming you're familiar with Greek mythology! I had tons of fun doing this. Normally, reds are a challenge for me; I'm more of a blue/green person.

From the Painting Guide: Just what constitutes a still life and what doesn't, how the elements need to be arrange or not, are among the things I've been pondering as I've dealt with the submissions for this project. From what I've read, it seems that ultimately it's any painting dominated by inanimate objects. How traditionally these are presented, or not, is a matter for the individual artist. So something that's moved into abstraction can be a still life.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Symbolism: Does it matter if a viewer recognizes the symbolism or references an artist has put into a painting? Does knowing who the Persephone referred to in the title is (or not) change the way you view the painting? Does it make you read symbolism into the pomegranates?

(If you're wondering who Persephone was, About.com's Ancient History Guide has the answer: Who Was Persephone?)
