From the Artist: I'm not very happy with this! I really wanted to capture the sparkly lights and the sunlight shining through the leaves. After I'd painted the vase and flower I thought the window-frame needed do be a deeper shade and have ended up with a rather ugly flat purple background. It looked better before I started 'mucking around', and my Japanese anemone looks hard and stiff instead of delicate.

I also feel there's too great a distance between the bottom of the vase and the flower, which is too close to the top of the top of the canvas. My favourite part of this painting (probably the only part I'm reasonably happy with) is the shaded part of the window frame leading towards the base of the vase. I didn't attempt to do the filigree pattern on the vase.

From the Painting Guide: I'd agree the flower is too close to the top of the composition (which makes the foreground seem excessive), but otherwise think you're being a little harsh on yourself. The plain window frame makes a nice contrast to the busy scene outside, and I agree the dark tone on the edge below the window is beautifully judged and painted. The petals have a sense of papery delicateness I associate with anemones.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Ellipses: Have another look at how much of the top of the vase you see. Given the angle on the base of the vase, I suspect it might not be such a silhouette, more an ellipses.
